About

The Takanashi clan's fortified residence, situated in the Otate neighborhood of Nakano, Nagano, provides valuable insights into the architectural and defensive strategies utilized during the Kamakura to early Sengoku periods. As a cadet branch of the Minamoto clan, the Takanashi clan established their stronghold in northern Shinano Province. The site encompasses a rectangular area fortified with a moat and palisade, complete with twelve building foundations, a Shinto shrine, and a unique Sengoku-period Japanese garden. Excavations revealed features such as a well and a garden pond, offering clues to the domestic and cultural life of the period. The site's historical significance is further highlighted by its involvement in regional power struggles, notably as allies of Uesugi Kenshin against the Takeda clan.
