About

Tell Mar Elias is an archaeological site located near Ajloun in northern Jordan, associated with the prophet Elijah. The site features the ruins of a Byzantine monastery, which include two significant churches. The smaller church dates back to the 4th-5th centuries CE, while the larger church, constructed in the 6th century CE, ranks among the largest known Byzantine churches in Jordan. A notable feature of the site is a mosaic inscription mentioning prophet Elijah. Artifacts such as marble carvings and small metal religious objects from the site are displayed in the Ajloun Castle archaeological museum. This site is of historical importance due to its religious connections and its reflection of Byzantine architectural and artistic achievements.
