Historical Context

About

The Boralday archaeological site in Almaty, Kazakhstan, is an early Iron Age necropolis linked with the Saka people. It encompasses 47 burial mounds, or kurgans, over 430 hectares, highlighting the funerary practices and social structures of the Saka culture from the 5th to 3rd centuries BCE. The necropolis features distinctly sized mounds, with the largest being 14 meters high and 100 meters in diameter. The arid climate has preserved human remains, clothing, and artifacts, providing significant insights into the Saka's material culture. The site's strategic location near the Bolshaya Almatinka River suggests its importance in both spiritual and social contexts. Plans for an open-air museum aim to preserve and showcase this rich cultural heritage, allowing for deeper understanding and appreciation of nomadic architectural and cultural traditions.
