About

Berytus, an ancient city located in modern-day Beirut, Lebanon, was a significant Roman colony and a center of cultural, legal, and architectural advancements in the Eastern Mediterranean. Established as a Roman colonia in 14 BCE, it became the only fully Latin-speaking city in the Syria-Phoenicia region, known for its grand public buildings, including a forum, amphitheater, and the renowned law school. The city's Roman influence persisted until the 5th century CE, evidenced by its sophisticated water management system of aqueducts and cisterns, and its bustling public baths. Berytus was also a hub for the worship of various gods, notably Poseidon. Despite its destruction by a devastating earthquake in 551 CE, Berytus remains a key archaeological site, providing insight into Roman urbanism and legal education.
