About

Lake Qaraoun is an artificial reservoir in the southern Beqaa Valley, Lebanon, created by the construction of the Qaraoun Dam in 1959. This significant water management feature was built across the Litani River and serves multiple purposes, including hydropower generation, irrigation, and domestic water supply. The lake supports a variety of ecological functions and is a habitat for migratory birds. The surrounding area includes agricultural lands with orchards and grazing areas. The archaeological site of Ain Jaouze, located nearby, features flints possibly related to the Neolithic period, suggesting the region's long history of human occupation and use. The lake and its infrastructure have significantly influenced the region's hydrology and continue to play a vital role in the local economy and ecology.
