About
The Kwiambana ruins, nestled within the Kwiambana Forest Reserve, are an ancient settlement characterized by its strategic construction on a dual-peaked granite inselberg. The site is fortified with substantial defensive structures, including a ditch and a rubble-topped rampart, rising between five and seven meters in height. These protective features highlight the settlement's focus on defense, enhanced by mud block walls with loopholes where the terrain is rocky. Within the confines of these defenses lie remnants of mud structures and sites indicative of former habitation. Notably, the settlement faced destruction during the early 19th century Fulani Jihad, an event marking its decline. Kwiambana's archaeological significance is underscored by its potential for revealing insights into the socio-political dynamics and architectural practices of the region during the late Post-Classical to Early Modern periods.
