About
Anak Tomb No. 3, located in Anak, North Korea, is a significant Goguryeo chamber tomb renowned for its well-preserved murals and unique epitaph. The site is part of the Complex of Koguryo Tombs and was discovered in 1949. The epitaph provides valuable information about Dong Shou, a general from the Xianbei state of Former Yan, who fled to Goguryeo and was involved in the Lelang commandery. Although the tomb's treasures were stolen, the murals remain intact, depicting elaborate scenes of Goguryeo life and possibly portraying Dong Shou and his wife. The tomb's artistry and size suggest it might belong to royalty, with scholarly debates over whether it is the mausoleum of King Micheon or King Gogugwon. This site offers crucial insights into Goguryeo culture, Chinese influences, and the social hierarchy of the period.
