About
Heritage Western Cape is a provincial heritage resources authority tasked with the protection and management of heritage sites within the Western Cape province of South Africa. Established on 25 October 2002, it serves as a successor to the National Monuments Council, adapting to the legislative changes brought about by the National Heritage Resources Act. The organization oversees approximately 2,500 provincial heritage sites, ensuring their conservation and appropriate recognition within the cultural landscape. Although primarily focused on managing existing sites, Heritage Western Cape also engages in the declaration of new provincial heritage sites and collaborates with municipal governments. Through a comprehensive system of committees and a council, Heritage Western Cape processes thousands of applications annually, reflecting its commitment to preserving the diverse heritage of the region for future generations.
