About

Bunjikat, also known as Shahriston, is an ancient archaeological site that served as the capital of the Principality of Ushrusana from the 6th to the 9th centuries CE. Located in the Shahristan Pass of Sughd Province, Tajikistan, it features significant structures such as Kalai Kahkaha I and II, which signify its historical importance as a hub of political and cultural activity. The site is notable for its fortresses and palaces that reflect the architectural prowess of the period, as well as the Sogdian art murals that underscore its cultural richness. Bunjikat maintained a degree of autonomy under the Kavus dynasty until its sovereignty ended in 893 CE, marking its significance in Central Asian history.
