About

Ajina Tepe is an archaeological site located 12 kilometers east of Bokhtar, Tajikistan. It is a significant Buddhist monastery cluster that reflects the revival of Buddhism in Tokharistan during the Early Post-Classical Period under the influence of the Western Turks. Dating back to the 7th-8th centuries CE, the site is notable for its impressive Buddhist art and architecture, showcasing the presence of Hinayana Buddhism practiced by Turkic nobility and local populations. The site was recognized for its cultural significance when it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in 1999. Ajina Tepe stands as a testament to the rich cultural and religious history of the region during this period.
