About
Bagyr, now a neighborhood within the city of Ashgabat, capital of Turkmenistan, is significant for its archaeological sites that reflect both defensive and religious historical functions. The Kulmergen Kala, a 19th-century fortress, is a remnant of the region's defensive architecture with its remaining walls marking its past strategic importance. Additionally, the Shikhalov Mausoleum, an octagonal domed structure, is an important funerary site believed to house the tomb of Nasipuri Sufi ascetic Abū ʿAlī al-Daqqāq, who died in 1015 CE. This mausoleum represents the religious heritage and architectural style of the period. Together, these sites offer insights into the historical socio-political and religious landscape of the area, showcasing its historical depth and cultural significance.
