About
Dehistan/Mashhad-i Misrian, located in the Balkan Region of Turkmenistan, was once a flourishing economic center during the Early and Late Post-Classical Period, particularly from the 10th to the 14th centuries CE. This site features a double-walled city with guard towers, indicative of its strategic significance and defensive needs. Among its notable structures is the Shir-kabir Mosque-Mausoleum, dating back to the 9th or 10th century CE, making it the oldest extant mosque in Turkmenistan. Additionally, the site contains a medieval graveyard with a line of mausoleums, reflecting the city's historical importance. The city of Misrian, however, saw its decline and eventual abandonment by the 15th century CE. It is recognized for its cultural significance and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.
