About
Konye-Urgench, located in modern-day Turkmenistan, is an archaeological site of significant historical importance, once a thriving city along the Silk Road. It was a prominent center from the 10th to the 14th centuries as the capital of the Khwarezmian Empire, known for its strategic location and cultural contributions. The site contains a variety of well-preserved structures such as mosques, mausoleums, and fortresses, reflecting its rich architectural heritage. The city faced numerous invasions, notably its destruction by the Mongols in 1221 CE and Timur in 1388 CE, which led to its decline and eventual abandonment in the 16th century. The ruins, including the Kutlug-Timur Minaret and mausoleums, offer a glimpse into the medieval Islamic architecture and the city's historical significance as a cultural and trade hub.
