About
Kamyana Mohyla is an archaeological site located in the Molochna River valley of Ukraine, characterized by its sandstone outcrop featuring numerous petroglyphs. These engravings date from the Upper Paleolithic to the Medieval period, indicating its significance as a site of continued ritual or symbolic importance through various eras. The site consists of isolated blocks of sandstone scattered over a large area, with caves and grottoes housing the petroglyphs. This unique formation is believed to have originated from a sandbank of the ancient Tethys Ocean. Historically, the site has been regarded as a remote sanctuary, with faint traces of red paint and engraved images suggesting religious exercises by hunters and cattle-breeders. Despite its cultural value, the site remains underprotected from environmental degradation.
