About
Merheleva Ridge, situated near Perevalsk in Luhansk Oblast, Ukraine, is a significant archaeological site characterized by an Eneolithic temple and burial complex. The site features four large stone mounds or kurgans, serving as a testament to the religious and ritual practices of the region's ancient inhabitants. Initially constructed around 4000 BCE, likely associated with the Dnieper-Donets or early Yamna culture, the site was developed further during the Early Bronze Age. It remained in use through the Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age until around the 5th century BCE. Archaeologists uncovered evidence of graves and sacrificial pits, indicating ritualistic activities, possibly involving human sacrifice. The presence of stone statues adds an artistic dimension to the site's significance. Merheleva Ridge is an invaluable resource for understanding the cultural and ritual evolution of Eastern European societies.
