About
Apollonia in Illyria was an ancient Greek trade colony established around 600 BCE by colonists from Corinth. Located on the right bank of the Aoös/Vjosë river, it developed into a significant polis and later became a prominent Roman city. The site was strategically positioned along trade routes linking the Adriatic coast with the interior lands, and played a crucial role as a trade gateway to the central Balkans. Apollonia maintained strong ties with the Roman Republic, which contributed to its prosperity during the Roman period. It was known for its school of Greek philosophy and military training. However, the city faced decline in the 3rd century CE due to the silting of its harbor, leading to its abandonment in the 4th century. Today, the ruins of Apollonia serve as an important archaeological site in Albania.
