About
The Tadrart Rouge is a sandstone mountain range located in southeastern Algeria, known for its remarkable rock art. This site provides an extensive record of human and environmental history over thousands of years. During the African humid period, the region was a savanna, supporting diverse wildlife such as elephants and giraffes, depicted in early Neolithic rock art. As the climate shifted towards aridity around 5,000 years ago, the artwork transitioned to show domesticated animals, reflecting changes in human activity and adaptation to a desert environment. The area's natural rock shelters house a significant collection of paintings and engravings, offering insights into the prehistoric culture and ecological changes of the Sahara region.
