About

Qalagah, a village in the Ismailli Rayon of Azerbaijan, is an archaeological site of significant historical interest, primarily from the Late Classical Period. The site includes a settlement and a cemetery dating back to the 1st or 2nd century CE, indicating a well-established community during this era. The accidental discovery of a Roman silver plate in 1899 highlights the site's connection to the broader Roman world. This artifact, depicting mythological figures such as a Nereid, tritons, and cupids, is a prime example of Roman toreutics from the 2nd or 3rd century CE. This plate suggests the influence and interactions between the Roman Empire and the rulers of Caucasian Albania, potentially serving as a trade item or a diplomatic gift. The site's artifacts and structures provide valuable insights into the cultural exchanges and historical dynamics of the region.
