About

Al-'Ain al-Sokhna is an archaeological site on the western shore of the Gulf of Suez, significant for its role as an ancient Egyptian port. Recent excavations have revealed its importance during the Old and Middle Kingdoms, with evidence of seafaring expeditions organized as early as the Old Kingdom. The site is linked to mining activities in the Sinai and features storage galleries containing artifacts such as wooden boat planks and ceramics from the 12th Dynasty. The site served as a critical hub for transporting resources like turquoise and copper, connecting the mining areas of Sinai with Memphis. This port's strategic location facilitated trade and resource acquisition, highlighting its significance in ancient Egyptian maritime history.
