About
The Kriemhildenstuhl is an ancient Roman quarry located in the Palatine Forest near Bad Dürkheim, Germany. Operated by the 22nd Legion of the Roman Army around 200 CE, this semicircular quarry extracted whitish quartzitic sandstone. The site reveals insights into Roman quarrying techniques and labor organization, with evidence of Arbeitsköpfe working parties and tool marks indicating the size of stone blocks produced. Inscriptions and drawings preserved in the lower levels provide further historical context. This quarry, along with nearby sites like the Brunhildisstuhl, underscores the extensive Roman industrial activity in the region. Its connection to the Heidenmauer, a nearby Celtic fortified settlement, adds a layer of historical and cultural significance to the area.
