Historical Context

About

The Lebak Cibedug site is an ancient terraced pyramid located near Citorek village in Banten Province, Indonesia. This sacred megalithic site, situated on the slope of Pasir Manggu hill, features a pyramid with nine terraces constructed from oval-shaped andesite stones. It includes numerous menhirs and dolmens, which signify its religious and ritual use by ancient communities. The site's architectural design predates Balinese temples and has influenced Hindu/Buddhist temple architecture across the Indonesian Archipelago. Despite its historical importance, the site remains unprotected and is threatened by erosion, archaeological theft, and encroachment. It highlights the need for conservation efforts and further archaeological investigation to preserve this significant heritage of Indonesia.
