About

Merak Temple, also known as Candi Merak, is a 10th-century Shivaist Hindu temple complex located in Central Java, Indonesia. Nestled on the southeastern slopes of Mount Merapi, the site comprises a main temple and three ancillary perwara temples, reflective of the Mataram Kingdom's architectural ingenuity. The temple's design showcases a unique blend of artistic elements, including well-preserved makaras with Nāga-shaped trunks and intricate bas-reliefs. The main temple, oriented eastward, houses significant deities such as Ganesha and Durga, although some statues have suffered damage over time. The temple's pyramidal roof, adorned with receding terraces and ratna pinnacles, demonstrates a style similar to the nearby Gebang temple. Despite some missing elements like the top ratna pinnacle, the temple's restoration was completed in 2011, offering insight into the religious and cultural practices of 10th-century Java.
