Historical Context

About

The Castle of Aamaj is a prominent archaeological site located in the Kukherd District of Hormozgan Province in southern Iran. This fortified structure, dating back to the Sassanid era (226 CE - 651 CE), served as both a center of governance and a military base. It features a trench, a defensive feature used in ancient Persia, highlighting its strategic importance. The castle's location on a hill above a palm oasis added to its height and defensive capabilities. Despite its significance, the castle was severely damaged by an earthquake in the 12th century and further destroyed by a flood in the 14th century. The site provides valuable insights into the defensive architecture and geopolitical history of the region during the Late Iron Age and Post-Classical Periods.
