The Kaigarayama shell midden is a significant archaeological site located in Kiyosu, Aichi, Japan, highlighting cultural transitions from the Jōmon to the Kofun periods. This site features the remains of a Yayoi period settlement accompanied by a large shell midden. The midden, with a diameter of 15 meters and depth of 2.5 meters, contains layers dating from the final stages of the Jōmon period to the early Kofun period, encapsulating the entire Yayoi era. Artifacts such as stone tools and pottery from both the Yayoi and Jōmon cultures indicate cultural coexistence. Additionally, the site includes a moated settlement and square burial tumuli, reflecting complex social structures. Recognized as a National Historic Site of Japan, it provides valuable insights into prehistoric Japanese life and interactions.
