About
Al-Jizah, historically known as Ziza or Zizia, is a town in northwestern Jordan with a rich archaeological and historical significance. It was first mentioned as a Roman military base in the 5th century CE and became a strategic location during the Muslim conquest of Byzantine Syria in 634 CE. The site features a medieval fort, which has undergone repairs and seen significant use across various periods, including the Umayyad, Ottoman, and modern eras. The fort's strategic importance continued into the 19th century when it became a stronghold for the Beni Sakhr tribe, under the leadership of Sattam Al-Fayez. Today, the fort remains a significant cultural and historical landmark, reflecting its varied history as a pilgrimage stop and military stronghold.
