About
Ptolemais in Cyrenaica, modern-day Libya, was a prominent city founded during the Ptolemaic Kingdom, likely by Ptolemy III Euergetes. Initially a small Greek settlement, it transformed into a significant urban center with robust defensive walls and a planned layout spanning 280 hectares. Key structures included a hippodrome, an amphitheatre, and three theatres, highlighting its civic and cultural significance. The city possessed advanced water management systems with aqueducts and vast cisterns. Ptolemais experienced several phases under Greek, Roman, and Byzantine control, serving briefly as the capital of Libya Superior. Despite surviving a devastating earthquake in 365 CE, it faced decline and destruction, ultimately during the 7th-century Muslim conquest. Its ruins are remarkably preserved, providing valuable insights into ancient urban planning and architecture.
