About
The Rop rock shelter, located on the Jos Plateau of Nigeria, is a significant archaeological site that provides insights into human activity during the Late Iron Age and the Classical Period. Excavated in 1944 by Bernard Fagg, the site revealed two distinct layers of occupation. The lower, undated layer contained crude stone tools, while the later, upper layer, dating back approximately 2000 years, featured higher-quality microlithic tools, pottery, and geometric forms. The discovery of a skeleton in a shallow grave, dated to around 25 BCE, along with an equid tooth, suggests a starchy, plant-based diet for the inhabitants. The site offers valuable information about early human technology, subsistence strategies, and burial practices in the region.
