Historical Context

About

Daepyeong is a significant prehistoric archaeological site located in the Nam River valley in South Korea. Spanning multiple millennia, the site showcases a complex sequence of occupations from the Jeulmun Pottery Period through to the Korean Three Kingdoms period. Key features include early ditch-enclosed settlements, substantial dry-fields, and evidence of craft specialization, particularly in greenstone ornament production. During the Middle Mumun Pottery Period, Daepyeong became a central settlement with large nucleated groups of pit-houses. The site provides crucial insights into early agricultural practices, social structures, and emerging social hierarchies in prehistoric Korea. Its archaeological significance is comparable to other major East Asian sites, offering valuable perspectives on early cultural development in the region.
