About
Sarazm is an ancient archaeological site located in north-western Tajikistan, dating back to the 4th millennium BCE. It is recognized for being the first proto-historical agricultural settlement in Central Asia and the most north-eastern of such settlements. The site was a significant center of economic activity, maintaining extensive trade networks that spanned from the Iranian Plateau to the Indus Valley. Sarazm showcases a variety of domestic and craft structures, including multi-room houses, workshops, and altars. Its economy was bolstered by agriculture, metallurgy, and mining activities, with evidence of intricate irrigation systems and metallurgical production. The site also holds artistic significance with its richly ornamented pottery and terracotta figurines. Sarazm's archaeological importance is underscored by its status as Tajikistan's first UNESCO World Heritage Site.
