About
Chandrapur University, established in 935 CE by Srichandra of the Chandra dynasty, was a prominent 10th-century educational institution and monastery in south-east Bengal. The university was founded on a significant land grant of 20,000 acres, as documented in a copperplate inscription discovered in 1958. This inscription, known as the Chandrapur Shasana, details the establishment of nine monasteries, which collectively formed the university. These monasteries were primarily Hindu Brahmin institutions, although established by a Buddhist king, and offered a diverse curriculum including Chaturvedas, Hindu Shastra, and various sciences. The architecture featured decorative artworks, and land was efficiently distributed among various scholars and workers. The university's precise location remains uncertain, but ongoing archaeological efforts aim to uncover its ruins.
