About

Ratu Boko is an archaeological site situated on a plateau in Java, Indonesia, approximately 196 meters above sea level. Spanning 16 hectares, it is unique in its combination of domestic, defensive, and religious features, distinct from the more prevalent Hindu temple sites in the region. The site is believed to have served as a fortified palace complex possibly linked to the Shailendra dynasty or the Mataram Kingdom. Key archaeological features include fortified walls, moats, and a variety of structures such as gates, pools, pavilions, and meditation caves. The site's dual religious significance is highlighted by the presence of both Hindu and Buddhist elements, including statues and inscriptions. The presence of the Abhayagiri Vihara suggests its use as a spiritual refuge in the 8th century, while later adaptations saw its conversion into a fortress during regional power struggles. The Ratu Boko site thus offers valuable insights into the historical syncretism and architectural practices in Central Java during the early Post-Classical Period.
