About
Umm Ruweim is an archaeological site located near Ghazali in Sudan, approximately 4 kilometers from the Nile's Fourth Cataract. The site comprises two Meroitic period forts and nearby cemeteries. Umm Ruweim I is notable for its square layout measuring 50 by 50 meters and features four towers, indicating a potential military function. Umm Ruweim II, located 400 meters southeast, has a more basic design with just a perimeter wall. The site, dating from 300 BCE to 300 CE, reflects the architectural and strategic interests of the Meroitic civilization in northern Sudan. Although the exact purpose of these structures remains uncertain, the forts and associated cemeteries offer invaluable insights into the region's historical dynamics and cultural landscape during the Late Iron Age and Classical periods.
