About

Anau, a city in Turkmenistan, is of significant archaeological interest due to its association with the Chalcolithic Anau culture, dating back to around 4500 BCE. This site succeeded the Neolithic Jeitun culture and represents an important phase in the prehistoric sequence of southern Turkmenistan. The region was a notable stop along the ancient Silk Road, indicating its historical significance in trade and cultural exchange. Excavations by Turkmen-U.S. teams in the 1990s and 2000s revealed fine painted pottery, characteristic of the Chalcolithic period. Anau's location and artifacts offer valuable insights into early urban development and cultural interactions in Central Asia.
