About
The Gawhar Shad Mausoleum, located in Herat, Afghanistan, is a significant 15th-century burial site built for the Timurid dynasty. Commissioned by Gawhar Shad, wife of Shah Rukh, the mausoleum was completed in 1438 and initially served as the tomb for her son, Prince Baysunghur. Over time, it became the resting place for several Timurid family members, including Gawhar Shad herself. Architecturally, the mausoleum is notable for its cruciform shape and impressive triple dome structure, featuring decorative elements like flowery mosaics in light blue-green hues and intricate patterns adorned with gold leaf and lapis lazuli. Although the site suffered damage and poor restoration in the 20th century, efforts have been made to preserve its historical tile work, highlighting its cultural importance.
