About

Mes Aynak, located in Logar Province, Afghanistan, is an archaeological site that was once a thriving Buddhist settlement and a significant center for copper mining. Covering a vast area of 40 hectares, the site includes numerous religious and ritual structures such as Buddhist monasteries, stupas, and statues, alongside industrial features like ancient copper mines and smelting workshops. The site is also rich in historical artifacts dating back to the Early Bronze Age, approximately 3000 BCE. Mes Aynak reached its peak between the 5th and 7th centuries CE, as evidenced by the discovery of Alchon Hun coins. However, the site faces threats from modern mining activities, which endanger its invaluable cultural and historical remains.
